this is a inter view with a video game desginer named Paolo Malabuyo
his job title: lead design manager, xbox-microsoft
Q:how did you become a video game designer?
A: like alot of people in the game industry, i grew up playing video game, wasting my money on arcades, and playing Atari and the earily game consoles. i studied art and desgin at carnegle Mellon-a double major in painting with computer graphics and animation. thats where i was able to develop conceptual and visual design skills, and at the same time i wasn't afraid of technology. i sold my computer and game system my freshman year of college. i wanted to spend time at school work, hold down a job, and still have a social life and date. it wasn't untill after i graduated that i fell back into playing games as my hobby. early in my career, i work in database software as a user interface (ui) designer, making people productive. while i was working at microsoft, an opening came up in sensibilities along with some technical acumen and experience doing UIs. i saw this opportunity to jump to designing software that made people unproductive.
Q: what was your frist job outa college?
A: i was a graphic designer for IMB, doing box designing, book illustration and technical illustration. it was the beginning of web desgin, which i got excited about and became involved in. in seemed like a good meduim for the creatives in the company. this is where i got interested in UI desgin.
Q:what do you enjoy most about your work as a video game designer?
A: i love being able to creat stuff- to come up with a cool ideal and see it happen. in my current situation, I've got this great opportunity to affect the experience of every single person who plays the next genaration xbox.
